July, 2021

Tiny Town Gallery is pleased to present the work of Joseph Marshall in August 2021.

"Gain of Function is medical research that alters on organism in a way that increases pathogenesis, transmissibility, or host range. In virology, this research is employed with the intention of better understanding current and future pandemics. This research can also carry inherent biosafety and biosecurity risks and are referred to as dual use research of concern (DURC).

"My interest in drawing and researching viruses began due to the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-21. I started with single virus images to show the range from simple helical and icosahedral shapes to more complex forms. I also created pieces of specific viruses, a sort of most-infamous list.

"I made pieces with groups of viruses both to showcase different viral realms, and as a reflection of social measures taken by the government to prevent the spread of the covid-19 virus. I also made pieces showing the interconnection of viruses (vectors), animals, humans, and medical research.

"I have placed information about viruses throughout the exhibition; my intention is that people review and expand their knowledge and understanding of how viruses work and the role in shaping the evolution of all organisms."
